The skeleton tower of the Gasometer is 78 meters (256 feet) high. Every 10 meters (33 feet) there is one of seven circular catwalks connected by steel girders. A rusty metal staircase connects it all with more than 400 total steps. The entire structure is wide open, with only waist-high railings on either side of the stairs and catwalks.

The gasometer provides for nearly unobstructed 360-degree views of Berlin from almost anywhere. For this photo, I was standing on the top catwalk, shooting east toward Therese Iknoian and the tour group in yellow reflective vests on the fourth catwalk from the top. In the distance you can see the famous TV tower rising above the top catwalk.

The Die Welt balloon glows in the sky above Berlin at sunset. The view from the top of the Berliner Dom is spectacular and well worth the few euros spent. On this evening, right before the Dom closed to visitors, I was able to catch the Die Welt balloon rising into the night, illuminated against a colorful sky. The Die Welt balloon is operated by Air Service Berlin and is secured to the ground by a steel cable.
